Group Captain R G Green AFC RAAF (Retd)





Ron Green joined the RAAF College entry 1950, and graduated as General Duties (Pilot).

He specialised in fighter operations until 1961, at various locations in Australia and (then) Malaya.

He was selected to undertake “Empire Test Pilot School” in UK throughout 1962, and on successful completion was assigned to the acquisition team for the Mirage IIIO Project, spending 1963 in Paris and other French locations.

He was involved during 1963-1966 in Australian Mirage flight test activities, both developmental and production, becoming Chief Test Pilot of the RAAF. During this period he saved an irreplaceable test aircraft, becoming the first Australian to successfully land a Mirage IIIO with a failed engine.

He was assigned to USAF F-111 Joint Test force 1966-1970 and was the first Australian to be qualified as captain on F-111 aircraft (Feb ’67), and then making an active contribution to the development of the various prototypes. He accepted the first F-111C on behalf of the Australian Government on 5 September 1968.

Throughout 1970-1974 he was responsible for all Flight Test activities at Aircraft Research and Development Unit, covering all aspects of evaluation, research and development.

He was assigned to staff duties during the period 1974 -1979, and was then appointed as Commander ARDU (Group Captain). This appointment continued until mid 1983.

He resigned from the RAAF in 1984, after acquiring broad and extensive experience in all aspects of flight test and evaluation of aircraft and weapon systems

In 1985 he commenced operation as a Defence Contractor Representative and in 1986 he formed Cal Pacific Pty Limited. While Cal Pacific dealt with communications and electronic warfare equipment, the primary business concerned the development of satellite ground stations for the international COSPAS/SARSAT satellite aided search and rescue system. Cal Pacific was responsible for sales of this equipment around the Pacific rim, installing stations in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to equipment sales and installations, Cal Pacific was required to develop communication/ data interfaces for each customer to connect with the local SAR organization, as well as training indigenous operating staff.

He retired in 1994.
