Air Power Australia Research

Air Power Australia research activities cover air power and broader military research and analysis, especially in the context of a modern integrated joint national force structure.

The research findings  presented by Air Power Australia are derived from rigorous quantitative analyses that have been peer reviewed in order to provide a benchmark for analytical technique and debate in Australia.

Research output is published in the Air Power Australia Analyses journal, Air Power Australia Technical Reports series, Air Power Australia Briefings series, parliamentary submissions and in other third party publications, some of which may be archived on the Air Power Australia website. In addition, research findings are discussed in the Air Power Australia NOTAMs journal.

Research Activities

Air Power Australia research activities have since its foundation been focussed in several priority areas:
  • Australian Defence Force force structure and capability development.
  • Regional capability growth and high technology weapons proliferation.
  • Regional and Australian military strategy.
  • Global military trends, especially in strategy and force structure development.
  • Evolution of basic and applied military technology.
  • Reform in the Australian Department of Defence.
  • Maintenance of Australia's defence industrial base.
Research Policy

Air Power Australia research is driven by these  four guiding policy principles:
  1. Quantitative analysis is prioritised over qualitative analysis.
  2. Constraint driven methodology is employed.
  3. Intellectual rigour is paramount.
  4. Innovation is vital.
The founders of Air Power Australia believe that research which is not innovative and intellectually supportable is not real research.

Air Power Australia is a non-profit entity, which is not affiliated with the Department of Defence, the Australian Defence Force or any other Commonwealth organisation. Air Power Australia is funded by its founders and contributors, and it has no funding relationships with any defence contractors, or affiliated entities.
